I may be able to answer that...
It might be (as well as other things) the Warmfront scheme.. I have a couple of colleagues that ONLY work for the scheme and it's pretty quiet at the moment, something to do with the new governments changes. A friend of mine has just had four weeks off work and he's started to take on private work a bit cheaper than others in order to bring some cash in. Apart from running his van he has no overheads.
Work that would normally be done by someone else I assume...

Defo the warmfront scheme that is making everyone else quiet. I had a small team of heating Engineers working on the scheme and because of government changes in funds I now have to look into the private sector. Hopefully the government start the warmfront up again soon, so everyone will be happy.

Hi I have to agree, this warmfront scheme is causing havoc, not just to small business but also to the big boys also. Lets hope this scheme gets scrapped, so as we all can make a good living again. Although I am still busy working 6 days a week in summer, I could do with some more install work to cut down on numerous small jobs. Good luck to all.

Nothing to do with the warm front scheme. Its about customers wanting to spend money at the moment. With the cost of living going up, gas and electric costing more, Food costing more. No one wants to spend money and those that do take the cheapest quote, normally from a 'plumber' fresh out of college if they have bothered to do that or there reading it out of a book. Or have just finished a 6 week course. Or someone whos been laid off and 'thinks' I will do some plumbing.

I rely on heating jobs, but specialise in Oil boiler servicing and installations (Im Oftec registered)

But take on all domestic and light industrial plumbing jobs too. Any thing that comes my way, I take it on (except gas work, as not gas safe registered)

Its dog eat dog at the moment... but as the year progresses it should get better!!

the warm fron scheme has virtually killed of all private work over the last few years. i know of a local company to me that has the warm front contract i know for a fact that the jobs are subed out 4 times down stream with each subi taking there cut. the customer also lose out the warm front scheme was responsable for fitting in my opinion the worst boiler made in the last 15 years, yes you have herd of it the ideal isar and i icos. i have fitted these bags of crap when i subbed to british gas i would not dream of fitting this rubish for my customer. i am worcester bosch accredited and my work i very busy at the moment but i do have to travel we think nothing of going out to 80 miles to fit a boiler.
i hope that this government will finally finish of this warm front scheme and give the grant money to the property owner istead. this will ensure that tax payers money is better spent and in turn should help the one man bands out there

Its rubbish at the moment! I have only recently gone self employed.... in the summer I know I could have picked a better time! But I agree with what moliverplumbing said. Customers are going for the cheapest quotes! I surveyed for a combi to combi swap the other day. I passed 2 quotes inc fitting 6 trv's, prog room t/stat and a magnaclean twin tech. and one inc a flush and she said someone had quoted her a lot less and that she didnt need trv's or a room stat!!!! these are the people that should be shot!!
