With an extra £1 million worth of funding thrown into the fund, the Scottish Government has announced plans to extend its popular Boiler Scrappage Scheme.

It is the third time the Scottish Government has opened the scheme in the last year, and up to 14,000 households are expected to benefit from a total scrappage fund of £6 million.

The Boiler Scrappage Scheme is designed to help households meet the cost of a new boiler. Under the scheme, homeowners and tenants can claim £400 towards the cost of replacing their old boiler with a new energy efficient eco friendly one.

Upgrading to a new boiler can help to reduce heating costs by up to a quarter. To qualify for the cash back on a new energy saving model, households will need to have a poor performing boiler which converts less than 70% of fuel into heat.

It is estimated that around 250,000 homes in Scotland still have an inefficient boiler, which is why the Scottish Government has decided to extend the Boiler Scrappage Scheme for another year.

Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil said: “This scheme will help households, right across Scotland, cut the cost of heating by replacing run down boilers with more efficient models.

“This is part of a major effort by the Scottish Government to help people live in greener homes which cost less to run.”
