  • Potterton Suprima 100 tripping out

I have a potterton suprima 100 boiler that is driving me potty! every so often it'll just trip out leaving us with no hot water or heating. It's seems totally random as to why it happens, the only thing we do notice is that the central heating pump continually runs and red light starts flashing. I resolve the problem by pressing the reset button which turns the flashing red light to steady red - but this just seems a temporary measure.

What could be causing this? We recently had the controller moved, could that have anything to do with it?

This is a very common fault with these. If you google the fault you will find many pages around this one. Have you replaced the PCB before? This is the normal repair. It could be a number of other things though depending on what happened just before the fault. new pcb's around £150 plus fitting which takes around an hr depending on access.

This is normally the PCB 90%+ but the gas valve can also be failing and give the same symptoms, worse case is both are u/s.

As an Ex British Gas Technical engineer I used to keep one of these PCB's as van stock, lost count of the amount replaced, potterton used to supply them free of charge

We've only just moved into the house a few weeks ago, the previous owners never mentioned the clearly faulty board!

We had British Gas out today - said exactly that - sadly he didn't have any van stock but at least it's in hand.

            Cheers

I have found this problem on a number of the Suprima boilers and it is a printed cucuit board (PCB) problem. Change the board and it will be solved.

Be carefull i would sugest you should also get a price on a new boiler there is nothing worse that trowing good money after bad. a new worcester bosch boiler with a 6 year manufactures parts and laour warantee could cost as little as £1300 and may be an extra £100 for a power flush to be carried out at the same time.

                  Hi Bert
In my time working on this boiler, the main problem is the pcb board.you would have to get a whole new wiring loom/pcb fitted.

Also on some of the 100 models you rtequire the serial number of the boiler as the is a specific range that requires the Fan to be changed in conjunction with any pcb uograde kit,

As others have suggested that get a cost from and installer to fit a new boiler with two year warranty. It may be the best long term cost effective solution other than forking out between 200-400 req

very common fault, replaced several over the years, just needs a new pcb. as others have said may be worth getting a quote on a new boiler if bg wont fix it

                        Hi Bert,

I can't best the advice already given above, but what I will say is that it's a known fact that the PCB on the Suprema's tends to develop problems and an intermittent lockout is one of these problems!

What I'd suggest is that you contact Potterton and get their advice, as they have a really good tech support team.

                        Regards,

Potterton also offer a fixed cost repair service with their HEATEAM engineers and IMO this is a very good option if TWO main parts are required and will be a lot cheaper than getting a local company in your area to do the works and who probably couldnt even buy the parts for the total amount that Heateam may charge. Ring Them and get a quote!

quite spooky this, as i had a boilerbreakdown yesterday evening, 13year old Potterton Suprima, red flashing light & very whiney fan!!!
After chatting to a good friend of mine, who used to work for BAXI & was on the forum (BAXI/Siemens) to sort out the problems of faulty PCB's, he suggested exactly the same ......... brand new PCB/wiring loom!!
I did have a look at the PCB, and it was the boxed style, which my mate indicated was one of the new ones!!!!

Potterton Suprima 40 goes red every few days

Hi, I have a Potterton Suprima boiler at my flat with underfloor heating. Few months back, my circulating pump burnt out. The plumber replaced the pump and the flow switch. But after that intermittently my boiler light turns red. every few days. if i press reset it works. Now I would say it is happening more frequently, once every few days. Can you guys please help what could be the problem ? From what I hear it could be PCB. I will change it but want to be sure if thats the only problem.
                              Thanks
