Wales
Mountains, valleys, rugby, legendary dragons and lots of sheep are probably the first things that come to mind when you think of Wales. However, it should be no surprise by now that there is a lot more to the country including three stunning national parks (Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire Coast and Brecon Beacons) and over 600 castles. That’s more than any other country in Europe!
A little history...
Wales has been under English rule since 1284 and was officially joined with England between 1535 and 1542. Since 1301, the Crown Prince of England has been referred to as the Prince of Wales to acknowledge the union.
You may not know...
For every person in Wales, there are four times as many sheep.
Wales claims the longest place name in the world: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch. Roughly translated it means: “The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio’s of the red cave”.
The highest mountain in the world is named after a Welshman, Sir George Everest.
Famous face: The man who led the development of the NHS, Aneurin Bevan, was born in Monmouthshire in 1897.
