The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has revealed the most hacked passwords and are calling for people to do more to protect their online accounts.<\/p>\n

Top of the list of most hacked passwords was \u2018123456\u2019 (23 million passwords), followed by \u2018123456789\u2019 and \u2018qwerty\u2019.<\/p>\n

Names, musicians and football teams also came out as being amongst the most used passwords, with \u2018ashley\u2019, \u2018blink182\u2019 and \u2018liverpool\u2019 all proving popular.<\/p>\n

The following were found to be the 10 most hacked passwords being used online:<\/p>\n

  2. 123456789<\/li>\n
  3. qwerty<\/li>\n
  4. password<\/li>\n
  5. 1111111<\/li>\n
  6. 12345678<\/li>\n
  7. abc123<\/li>\n
  8. 1234567<\/li>\n
  9. password1<\/li>\n
  10. 12345<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Speaking about the research, NCSC Technical Director, Ian Levy, said: \u201cNobody should protect sensitive data with something that can be guessed, like their first name, local football team or favorite band.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Password reuse<\/h2>\n

    If you\u2019re using the same password across multiple accounts, it makes life much easier for hackers. All they need is 1 password and they have access to multiple accounts.<\/p>\n

    Each time you set up a new online account, such as an email or social media account, come up with a new password.<\/p>\n

    On reusing passwords, the NCSC said: \u201cPassword reuse is a major risk that can be avoided \u2013 nobody should protect sensitive data with something that can be guessed, like their first name, local football team or favourite band.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Make a secure password<\/h2>\n

    Passwords are there to protect personal information yet they\u2019re not always taken seriously. Rather than taking the time to put together a strong password, that will prevent a hacker from gaining access to an online account, it can be easy to quickly type something simple. Doing this could eventually lead to your account being hacked.<\/p>\n

    To protect your online accounts, the NCSC recommend sticking 3 different memorable words together.<\/p>\n

    The NCSC went on to stress the importance of a secure password: \u201cUsing hard-to-guess passwords is a strong first step and we recommend combining three random but memorable words. Be creative and use words memorable to you, so people can\u2019t guess your password.\u201d<\/p>\n
