And those employees need to be paid. <\/p>\n<p>On or before each pay date, you must provide each employee with their own unique payslip. It\u2019s important to do this in line with government instruction so in this article we take you through everything you need to include on those payslips.<\/p>\n<h2>How to run a payroll<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to getting your company up and running with a payroll, you have a couple of options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make them yourself using payroll software<\/li>\n<li>Hire a payroll provider<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Setting up payroll yourself<\/h3>\n<p>To begin running payroll yourself, you must complete some essential tasks before you can pay your employees for the first time: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Register as an employer with Her Majesty&#8217;s Revenue and Customs (HMRC)<\/li>\n<li>Select payroll software<\/li>\n<li>Records<\/li>\n<li>Inform HMRC about your employees<\/li>\n<li>Pay owed tax to HMRC<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once all of the above has been completed, you can begin running payroll and choose how often and when your employees will be paid.<\/p>\n<h3>Payroll providers<\/h3>\n<p>A payroll provider, such as an accountant, can run payroll for you with varying levels of support to suit your needs. Their role can include providing payslips to your employees, collecting employee records and making payments to HMRC.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you do hire a payroll provider, as the employer you will need to keep a record of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much your employees are paid<\/li>\n<li>Necessary reductions to pay<\/li>\n<li>Payments to be made to HMRC<\/li>\n<li>Leave and sickness absences<\/li>\n<li>Tax code notices<\/li>\n<li>Taxable expenses or benefits<\/li>\n<li>Payroll Giving Scheme documents (pension, student loans, Payroll Giving donations)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even if you hire a payroll provider, it\u2019s you as the employer who has a legal responsibility to pay your employees.<\/p>\n<h2>What to include on a payslip<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few bits of information that must be displayed on each and every payslip your employees receive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gross wage (pay before any deductions have been made)<\/li>\n<li>Tax and National Insurance<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Net\u2019 wage (payer after deductions have been made)<\/li>\n<li>How many hours have been worked (if pay changes depending on time worked)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Payroll software<\/h2>\n<p>Payroll software is essential if you\u2019re planning to run payroll yourself. The features of the payroll software will vary depending on the supplier but you should look out for the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recording employee details<\/li>\n<li>Calculating pay and any deductions<\/li>\n<li>Reporting payroll information to HMRC<\/li>\n<li>Let you know how much is owed to HMRC<\/li>\n<li>Working out statutory pay (e.g. maternity leave, paternity leave or sick pay)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are several choices when it comes to selecting payroll software. If you have fewer than 10 employees, then you can select a free payroll software.
