Insight from heating solutions provider Glow-worm has shown that 36% of installers say a lack of work means they are unable to grow their business.

The survey was carried out among 500 installers in the UK in an effort to find out how they are looking to upskill, upsell and recruit as a means to grow. Alongside a lack of work, lack of knowledge and time for business planning were also pinpointed as reasons preventing installers from developing.

Installers are looking to diversify and upsell

Whilst 39% of respondents said they wished they had more work, 34% were also keen to upskill by getting to grips with renewables. With the UK public showing strong support for the use of renewable energy, offering more diverse services could expand the jobs available to many installers. Whilst renewable installations such as heat pumps and solar thermal look set to remain popular, the uncertainty and potential deep cuts to solar PV subsidies could result in solar installers also diversifying into boiler installation and electrical work. Another 34% expressed that they wanted to grow through upselling on installations, another area where future growth is likely as more homeowners adopt smart technology for their heating systems.
