How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost?

How much does a boiler service cost?

A boiler service costs between £60 to £180.

Prices will vary based on the engineer, where you live as well as the type, condition, and age of your boiler. The price may increase if your boiler needs a repair in addition to the standard servicing procedures.

Whether you have a gas or an oil boiler, the service needs to be carried out by a qualified heating engineer. For gas boilers this is a Gas Safe registered engineer and for oil boilers they should be registered with OFTEC.

How much does a boiler service cost

The price of most boiler services fall between £80 and £100. But they can easily be cheaper (around £60) or more expensive (up to £180).

As you might expect, a lot can affect the price of a boiler service, including:

  • Type of boiler (combi, system or regular)
  • Rates charged by the engineer
  • Where it’s fitted (ease of access)
  • Your location
  • Fuel

Gas boiler service cost

Most gas boiler service costs sit around £80 to £100.

Oil boiler service cost

An oil boiler service includes an inspection of the oil tank as well as the boiler. This means that they can take longer than gas boiler services with costs reaching up to £160.

Types of boiler service

You have a couple of options when paying for a boiler service.

The most popular is to pay for the service as a one-off when it's carried out. But some people take out boiler cover plans which include servicing amongst other kinds of boiler protection.

One-off boiler service cost

On average, paying for a one-off boiler service will cost between £80 and £100.

How much you end up paying will vary based on a number of things. Mainly, the rates set by the heating engineer. And one thing that can see the rates of an engineer rise is where you live. London is typically the most expensive place to have a boiler serviced and prices could creep over the £100 mark.

The total boiler service cost will also be impacted by the type of boiler you have. Regular boilers are installed alongside tanks in the loft and a hot water cylinder which means they take longer to service than combi boilers which don’t have any external parts.

An older boiler is likely to need more thorough servicing which will take longer and may need repairs. If your boiler is over 10 years old, or often breaks down, then getting a new boiler and installation is the best idea.

Boiler cover cost

A boiler cover plan is insurance for your boiler.

Rather than paying for the service in a lump sum, you pay a monthly fee of between £9-£13 (on average). Over a year this is more costly as you’ll end up paying between £108-£156. But as well as to the servicing costs you’ll also be covered for any repairs, 24-hour emergency breakdowns or a boiler replacement.

One-off boiler service vs boiler cover

In terms of keeping costs to a minimum, paying for a one-off boiler service makes better financial sense for most people. This is especially true if your boiler is only a few years old as breakdowns are unlikely to happen.

However, if your boiler is over 8 years old or needs repairing on a regular basis, a boiler cover plan may be a good choice as you may be able to avoid the larger costs of repairs or a replacement.

Does my boiler need a service?

All boilers need to be serviced once every 12 months.

A boiler service is the best way to keep your heating system running reliably, efficiently and safely. An annual boiler service is also essential to keep the warranty valid. Forget to get your boiler serviced and your boiler will no longer be covered by a warranty.

What does a boiler service involve?

During a boiler service, the heating engineer's opportunity to check all the components in the boiler are in good working order and to identify problems before they lead to costly and inconvenient breakdowns. If/when your boiler breaks down you will be left with no heating and/or hot water for your home until you can find an engineer to fix the problem and you're likely to be facing significant costs.

A boiler is very much like a car in the sense that it will run much more effectively when it is well maintained. If it is left too long without professional attention, it will become less efficient at burning fuel which means higher heating bills and unnecessary carbon emissions which damage the planet.

Finally, the service includes several safety checks which will give you peace of mind that your boiler doesn't pose a danger to your home and family.

What to do if your boiler breaks down

If your boiler stops working, don’t wait for your next service. Instead, contact a heating engineer right away.

On average, boiler repairs cost between £150 for minor replacement parts and £400 or more for key components like a heat exchanger. If the boiler is not able to be repaired, a replacement is likely to cost between £2,000-£4,500.

If your boiler is still protected by the manufacturer's warranty the cost of the repair may already be covered so it's best to check with the manufacturer. Warranty lengths can vary between 1-12 years but may not cover all parts and labour.

When to get your boiler serviced

The best time of year to get your boiler serviced is during the summer.

You may want to forget all about your boiler when the weather warms up. But it can be easier to book an engineer at a time to suit you and prices tend to be lower.

Plus, if the engineer does need to repair the boiler then going without heating for a while during the summer isn’t as bad as during the winter. And once the service is finished, you can rest easy knowing that the boiler is in the best possible condition for when the colder weather arrives.
